  • Utilize the information from your 1095-A to fill out Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit.
  • Use Form 8962 to “reconcile” your premium tax credit — compare the amount you used in 2020 to lower your monthly insurance payment with the actual premium tax credit you qualify for depending on your final 2019 income. Any difference will impact your refund or tax owed.

  • Authenticate necessary information about your health plan and family members on Parts I and II of the form. See errors? Contact the Marketplace Call Center.
  • If you paid the entire price for your health plan, Part III, Column C should be blank or have the number “0.”

If you paid the full fee and are sure you don’t qualify for a premium tax credit

  • You do not have to fill out or include Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit when you file your federal taxes.
  • Maintain your Form 1095-A with your other tax records.

If you paid full price and required to see if you qualify for a premium tax credit based on your final 2019 income

  • When it’s available later in January, utilize the Health Coverage Tax Tool to find the premium for the second-lowest-cost silver plan (SLCSP)that applied to you for 2019. (If you paid full price, this information would not appear on your 1095-A.)
  • Use this SLCSP figure to fill out Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit (PDF). You will find out if you be eligible for a premium tax credit based on your final 2019 income.
  • If you are eligible, your credit will either increase your 2020 refund or reduce your tax owed.
