Your Options if You Had Other Health Insurance Plans

If you had coverage through Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or another source, depending on the coverage you had, you might obtain Form 1095-B, Health Coverage, to assist you to complete your taxes.

  1. If you receive Form 1095-B
    • You ought to have it by mid-March.
    • Read Parts III and IV to find information concerning:
    • Your 2019 insurance plan
    • Covered persons and the months they had coverage
  2. Complete your tax return If you and all those who depend on you had qualifying health coverage for all of 2019:
    • Check the “Full-year coverage” box on your federal revenue tax form. You can locate it on Form 1040 (PDF).
    • If you got Form 1095-B or 1095-C, do not include it with your tax return. Save it with your other tax forms.

If You Had No Health Insurance Plan

Unlike in past tax years, if you did not have coverage during 2019, the charge no longer applies. This means you don’t require an exemption in order to avoid the penalty.

Important: Some states have their own individual health insurance obligation

You would NOT obtain Form 1095-A unless you or someone in your family had Marketplace coverage for all or part of 2019.

If You Had Job-Based Health Insurance

Depending on the type of job-based coverage you had (including COBRA or retiree coverage), you may get one of these from your employer or insurance organization:

  • Form 1095-B, Health plan
  • Form 1095-C, Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage

IMPORTANT

  • Enrolled in a plan through the SHOP Marketplace? The SHOP Marketplace does not offer 1095 tax forms. Call your employer or your insurance company with inquiries.
  • If you do not get either form, don’t worry. Some employers do not offer either form to their employees. You don’t require one to file your taxes.
  1. If you receive Form 1095-B or Form 1095 – You ought to have it by mid-March.
    • Read Parts II and IV on Form 1095-B or Parts II and III on Form 1095-C to find information regarding:
      • Your job-based insurance proposal and 2019 coverage
      • Covered persons and the months they had coverage
  2. Complete your tax returnIf you and those who depend on you were covered by job-based health coverage for all months of 2019:
    • Check the “Full-year coverage” box on your federal income tax form. You can locate it on Form 1040 (PDF).

    Do not delay filing your taxes only since you didn’t get Form 1095-B or 1095-C.

    If you got Form 1095-B or 1095-C, do not include it with your tax return. Keep it along with your other tax documents.
