How to Cancel Cigna Health Insurance

“Disenrollment” means ending your membership in a Cigna health insurance plan. Canceling health insurance can be voluntary (your own choice) or involuntary (not your own choice).

Some examples:

• You can disenroll from Cigna Medicare from October 15 until December 7. You may be able to disenroll at other times of the year if you meet certain exceptions like moving out of the Cigna service area or eligible for Extra Help with prescription drugs.
• There are also a few instances where you would be required to leave the plan, as well as if you move out of a Cigna service area, or if Cigna leaves the Medicare program.

Whether leaving the Cigna health insurance plan is your choice or not, this section explains your Medicare prescription drug coverage options after you leave and the rules that apply. Till your membership officially ends, you must retain your Medicare prescription drug services through your Cigna health insurance plan, or you will have to pay for them yourself.

Voluntary Disenrollment

You may cancel your plan only during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), during the Annual Coordinated Election Period (AEP), which occurs from October 15 through December 7, or (if you are not registered in a PDP plan only) during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) from January until March.

SEPs comprise those situations where:

• You have made a change in residence outside the service location
• You are entitled to Medicare Part A and Part B, and you receive any kind of assistance from Medicaid
• You receive Extra Help with your Medicare prescription drug expenses
• You receive care in an institution, like a nursing home or long-term care facility
• You were not adequately informed of the creditable status of drug coverage offered by an entity needed to give such notice, or a loss of creditable coverage
• If you register in the Program of All-inclusive Care for Elderly (PACE)
• You meet such other exceptional conditions like the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) may provide

During a SEP, you may discontinue enrollment in a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) provided by a PDP sponsor or change to a different Part D plan. If you disenroll from (or are disenrolled from) a Cigna Medicare Part D plan, you may afterward enroll in a new Part D plan within the SEP time period. After you have enrolled in a new Part D plan, 1 of 2 things happen:

1. The Special enrollment period ends for you even if the time frame for the SEP is still in effect.
2. You can continue to use the election until it is no longer a situation (loss of extra help, no longer in the institution, etc.)

Choices for Continuing Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage If You Leave a Cigna Plan

If you leave a Cigna health insurance, you may have the option of joining another Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Health Plan (like a Medicare HMO or PPO) with prescription drug coverage, if any of these types of plans are available in your location and they are accepting new members.

Please Note: You may not enroll in a new plan during other times of the year unless you meet certain special exceptions like if you move out of Cigna’s service area, want to join a policy in your area with a 5-star rating, or you qualify for additional help with your prescription drug costs.
