If you buy your own health coverage and are wondering when and how you can change your plan, this explains your options.

When Can I Change Health Insurance in 2020?

You have two chances:

  • During open enrollment. To get health insurance coverage for 2021, open enrollment is November 1 to December 15, 2020.
  • During special enrollment. You are eligible if you have had specific changes in your life, also known as qualifying events such as family member death.

These are the only periods you can change a plan. If you miss open enrollment or do not qualify for a special enrollment period, then you’ll have to wait until the next period.

How Do I Change My Health Insurance Plan During Open Enrollment?

How you change your health insurance program is based on how you bought the one you already have.

  • If you bought your health insurance plan on healthinsplans.org, you could sign up for a new plan online, too. We will help you do the rest.
  • If you bought the plan you want to change through a health plan advisor or agent, contact them.
  • If you bought the plan, you want to change on healthcare.gov, log in to your account there. See changing health plans once you enroll to get started.

How Do I Change My Health Insurance Plan During Special Enrollment?
