Health Insurance Marketplace – Understand Form 1095 A
How to Utilize Form 1095-A
If anyone in your family had a Marketplace plan in 2019, you should obtain Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, by mail no later than mid-February. It may be accessible in your HealthCare.gov account as soon as mid-January.
IMPORTANT: You must have your 1095-A prior to your filing.
Do not file your taxes until you have an accurate 1095-A.
- Your 1095-A includes information concerning Marketplace plans anyone in your household had in 2019.
- It comes from the Marketplace and not the IRS.
- Keep your 1095-As with your vital tax information, such as W-2 forms and other records.
Finding Your 1095-A Online
Note: Your 1095-A may be accessible in your HealthCare.gov account as early as mid-January, or as late as February 1.
- Log into your HealthCare.gov account.
- Under “Your Existing Applications,” choose your 2019 application — not your 2020 application.
- Click “Tax Forms” from the menu on the left.
- Download all 1095-As indicated on the screen.
Note: If you cannot find your 1095-A in your Marketplace account, contact the Marketplace Call Center.
Contents of Form 1095-A and Why You Require It
- Your 1095-A contains information regarding Marketplace plans any member of your household had in 2019, as well as:
- Premiums paid
- Premium tax credits utilized
- A figure is known as “second-lowest-cost Silver plan” (SLCSP)
- You will use information from your 1095-A to fill out Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit (PDF). This is how you will “reconcile” — find out if there is any difference between the premium tax credit you used and the amount you are eligible.
- If you had a Marketplace plan but didn’t take advance payments of the premium tax credit.
Checking Form 1095-A for Accuracy & What to Do If It’s Wrong
- Prudently read the instructions on the back.
- Ensure it’s accurate. If anything about your plan or household is wrong, contact the Marketplace Call Center.
- Ensure the information about the “second lowest cost Silver Plan” (SLCSP) is correct.
How to Know If Your SLCSP Information is Accurate
Have a look at Part III, column B of your 1095-A, titled “Monthly second-lowest-cost silver plan (SLCSP) premium.” It should indicate figures for every month any household member had the Marketplace plan.
The SLCSP premium is inaccurate if:
- Part III, Column B has a “0” or is blank for any month somebody in your household had the Marketplace plan
- You had changes in your family that you didn’t tell the Marketplace about — such as having a baby, moving, getting married or divorced, or losing a dependent
If either applies to you, you will employ our tax tool to get the second lowest cost Silver plan premium.
Utilize the Information from Your 1095-A to “Reconcile.”
After you have an accurate 1095-A and second lowest cost Silver plan premium, you’re set to fill out Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit.
