Cigna Open Enrollment 2020 and Special Enrollment Periods

There are certain times during the year when you can buy Cigna health insurance plans directly through Cigna or on the Health Insurance Marketplace. These periods of time are known as the Open Enrollment and the Special Enrollment periods.

Open Enrollment

The Open Enrollment Period is the time when individuals and families can purchase a new health insurance plan or make changes to their pre-existing health plan directly through Cigna or on the Health Insurance Marketplace. Health insurance plans that are effective on January 1 have an Open Enrollment Period from November 1 – December 15 of the year before, in most states.

For instance, if you wanted to enroll or make changes to a plan with an effective date of January 1, 2021, your Open Enrollment Period would start from November 1 – December 15, 2020.

Notably, some states may have a longer Open Enrollment Period.

Special Enrollment

If a significant event happens in your life, such as losing your health coverage, locating to another state, getting married, or the birth or adoption of a child, the Special Enrollment Period enables you to make changes to your health coverage. These significant life changes are referred to as a qualifying life event. You will have 60 days to change your health plan from the date a qualifying life event takes place.

Or, in case you recently lost your job and your health insurance coverage as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period. You may also be eligible to financially qualify for both a premium tax credit and a cost-sharing reduction to aid reduce your health insurance premium and total out-of-pocket costs.

Examples of qualifying life events are as follows:

• You lose your health insurance plan at the job
• You get married or divorced
• You have a baby or adopt a child
• You are no longer dependent on another person’s health insurance plan
• You gained or became a reliant on through birth, adoption, marriage, and placement for adoption
• You lose Medicaid or CHIP health care insurance coverage
• Your insurance company made a mistake on your insurance contract or made an enrollment error
• You have a Marketplace plan and your status for getting assistance to pay for your plan changes
• You moved and required to pick another plan based on the insurance coverage area
• Your migration status changes
• And other qualifying life happenings
